Great South Bay Music Festival Review PDF Print E-mail
Written by Thomas Dudley

Great South Bay Music FestivalWow -- I had a great time last night at the Great South Bay Music Festival with my friend Mike.  This is the first time I have gone to this event, and I am  glad that I did!  Mike kept telling me how awesome and unique this was -- I am too young to have gone to Woodstock, but this seemed kinda like a Woodstock Long Island Style!  The event was from 11:30am until 11:00pm, we didn't get there until about 6.  I got to see four of the acts on the Blue Point Brewery Stage -- The Bridge, The Felice Brothers, The New Deal, and Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, all of which were awesome.  The New Deal is a kind of funky, electronic, dance type live music produced on a Bass, Drums, a slew of Synthesizers.  They had the crowd going NUTS!  Karl Denson's Tiny Universe was amazing, they had a kind of blues, jazz, jam, funk sound to them.  This kind of music was never really something I listened to, but I am ready for more.  As far as vendors, there were a ton of them there.  Big ones such as WBAB, Blue Point Brewery, Newsday, Dave and Busters.  There was also a Kids Zone and a Cultural Stage, plenty of things to do if you were there all day.  Food wasn't badly priced, my friend got a burger, which was $5, the rest of the food was priced around the same.  Beers provided by Blue Point Brewery were $6.  All in all this is a GREAT day out, and I am ready for next years festival!

Fee to use Eisenhower Park PDF Print E-mail
Written by Thomas Dudley
Monday, 28 June 2010 01:32

I was driving home from Micro Center in Westbury today and the entrance to the Southbound Meadowbrook Parkway was closed.  So instead I take a detour to Eisnehower Park to cut through to Hempstead Turnpike.  I was in for a not so pleasant surprise, there was a $5 per vehicle fee to use the park.  This fee is for non-Nassau County residents, valided by your photo ID.  I told the person at the booth that I was not using the park, I was only using the road to get to Hempstead Turnpike.  She said that I would still have to pay the $5.00 vehicle fee, or I can make a U-Turn and leave the park property.  I think it's crazy enough to charge for use of a public park, let alone charge someone for just driving through to get to the main road.

Additionally, Cantiague Park in Hicksville, Cedar Creek in Seaford, Christopher Morley in Roslyn-North Hills, North Woodmere in North Woodmere, and Wantagh Park in Wantagh will also charge non-residents a fee.  These fees are in effect on Saturday, Sunday and Holidays from 8am to 4pm, from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

NYS Assembly Passes No Fault Divorce Bill PDF Print E-mail
Written by Thomas Dudley
Friday, 02 July 2010 04:07

The New York State Assembly Thursday passed a no-fault divorce bill.  New York is the last state to allow couples divorce when one spouse thinks the marriage is over.  Current laws state that the couple must enter a one year separation period, or assign blame to one spouse.  The current requirements for ending a marriage without the seperation period are adultery, abandonment, or cruelty.

The no-fault bill will allow one spouse to push for divorce stating underoath that the marriage has been dead for a minimum of six months.  One benefit to having a no-fault bill passed in New York is it would stop couples from making false accusations and causing unnecesary conflict.  This bill awaits a signature from Governor Paterson.

Ten things to do when creating a new website PDF Print E-mail
Written by Michael Beach
Tuesday, 29 June 2010 04:46

Alright, so you’ve got your CMS (website software) installed and set up, and you’re looking at your new front page.

Now what?

Here’s my suggestions for the first ten things to do to get your website “off the ground” as it were. It’s recommended that they be done in some kind of order, as you will get the best results with one after having done the others before it.

1. Edit your front page

This should go without saying. Change the default content to something a little personal talking about you and your new site. State what it’s about, but don’t go overboard with the keywords or ads. A new site is a new site, but a new site rife with “keywords” and ads will scream “stay away!”

Don’t worry about themes at this point, unless you have something specific in mind. The search engines won’t care what kind of theme you use and they’ll re-index as things change. There will be plenty of time for theming later.

2. Get an XML Sitemap plugin

XML sitemaps are sitemaps specifically designed for search engines to use to crawl your site quickly and effectively. They contain a list of every page regardless of whether or not it’s linked from another page, and the page’s last update. Even better, most XML Sitemap plugins will automatically “ping” (or notify) the search engines when you create a new page or update a page. A must have for fast indexing.
